Untold Story
I’M PRATAP SRIVASTAVA,
AND I GOT KNOCKED DOWN. HARD.
There lies immense agony, hardships, fear, efforts, and determination
behind every inspirational story.
Our world is inhabited with several unseen people who fight unseen battles with themselves on a regular basis, with moments of fading hope and burning passion to succeed in their mission to glory. I believe that such people who are unknown to many and known to a few in this whole wide world are real warriors who are steadily learning the art of fighting battles against all hardships.
I faced a deadly road accident on 17th August, 2017, at around 2:00 p.m in Mathura and at that moment I had no clue that my life was never going to be the same.
I got unconscious after the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors informed my father about my spine, which broke in the accident. Despite the urgency of the situation, my father insisted that we should go to AIIMS, because it is the top/best hospital in the country.
When I recall that moment when I was taken to an ambulance to go to AIIMS, my body goes numb and tears roll down my cheeks. I was screaming badly in the ambulance due to the sheer pain. I asked my wife to keep massaging and pressing my legs. We reached AIIMS Trauma Center (Delhi) late that night. I got admitted into the hospital and went through a detailed X-Ray. When reports came, doctors informed my father that I had a blood clot and broken ribs.
According to CT Scan and MRI, I suffered from five fractured ribs on the right side and five broken vertebrae D1 Disc, (L1-L5) in the lumbar region, S4-S5 sacral region, and on the left side SI joint, along with a burst fracture in L2 vertebrae of the spine. Doctors could not shift me to the OT and operate because I was ceaselessly bleeding. Due to medical attention, my bleeding got stable after a few hours, and then I was shifted to OT.
A team of highly qualified and responsible doctors performed my operation on 22nd, August, 2017.
After the operation, when my father asked about my recovery, my doctor said, “I am concerned that he may be able to sit but unable to walk.”
On 25th August, 2017, I got discharged from the hospital. I started taking physiotherapy sessions where I felt that my physiotherapist is just another professional having several patients like me and saying the similar things to each one of us “You’ll be alright” with no depth in words or actions.
On 5th September, 2017, I met my old friend who gave me a boost to live because I was so exhausted with constant pain and treatments that I wanted to end my life. He advised me to look for a rehabilitation center, which can immensely help my road to recovery.
I searched a lot and finally decided to go with ISIC Indian Spinal Injury Center, Delhi because of its proximity to my place of residence and AIIMS. On 16th October 2017, I arrived at the Rehab on a stretcher. Since then to this date, I have been pushing myself to achieve a massive improvement in my condition. In the beginning, I faced a ton of struggles and many times thought of giving up on Rehabilitation. However, I kept going because no one except myself can make the positive difference in my condition.
Further I joined Healthy future, Neuro rehabilitation center Ahmedabad on 4th April 2021and due to my job in Agra I have to leave Healthy future on 10th December 2021 then I joined PROTON rehabilitation center in Agra on 16 December 2021 and I am doing my rehabilitation in Agra in Proton till date.
At last, I would like to conclude by saying, as per my experience, no obstacles can prevent us from achieving the ultimate goal. Every rehab center will break your mental barrier and give you a new way to lead your life and help you to Reborn, which will be a new normal for us, but don’t give up and push yourself to the limit. I want people to get inspired, learn and understand that no hurdle is as big as your determination to succeed.
